When you say untraceable, do you mean that the IP address is in invalid memory?
If so, then chances are a DLL is getting unloaded while a window or callback etc is still using it. Run the program, get the crash and note the IP. Then run the program again, break it and see if the IP matches a DLL. That might give you an idea which DLL is getting goofed.

You gotta see this code to envision my hell. 
I can honestly understand some of the stuff they did, but it just seems to me that they made it harder to maintain. Objects that create pointers to themslves so that the programmer doesn't have to worry about calling delete himself. The ability to orphan the pointer so that you can call delete if you want to. Gads.
Anyway, there are callbacks in place, but I didn't change the application, I merely added the DLL to the list of possible DLL's that could load. None of the other DLL's are exhibiting this behavior, so I'm kind of at a loss as to even how to describe it.
I wonder if it's got anything to do with us using that damn stingray crap, and my DLL just pushed the whole application over the edge...

I really wish people would stop trying to make C/C++ idiot proof. It just makes it harder for really programmers to do their job!!!
Have you tried not unloading the DLL? There really isn't any harm in it.

No, but I don't really have any control over that. The app exists in what amounts to an un-editable state, meaning I'm not permitted to change the app to work with my DLL. This actually makes sense to me because we have other DLL's that could be used instead of the one I've written that work the way the app is current written.
There are aspects of this code that are INFURIATING, but the legacy is over seven years old. Like any other project I've been involved with over the last 15 years, nobody wants to pony up the bucks to make the code more maintainable by programmers that are new to the team. There's an almost complete lack of real technical documentation, and most of the guys that wrote the original code are LONG gone.
Of course, in-source comments are non-existant in the most critical parts of the code, so the only wehicle we have is to review the source code one line at a time. I'm apprehensive about rebuilding the code unless we start from scratch because nobody is absolutely sure (and more often than not, not even remotely knowledgable) about how all the code interacts.
It doesn't help when the code exhibits an eclectic coding style and non-adherance to anything that could be called corporate policy about how to write/format the code. Add to that an insane lack of use of MFC except when (apparently) absolutely necessary, and things start to get real whacked out.
Finally, there's the issue of source code control. We use Visual SourceSafe, and most fot eh files are linked between major revisions of the code, so changing version 2 will also effect changes version 1. How absolutely stupid is that?
What's funny is that we all agree that it needs to be fixed, but upper management would just laugh us out of the office if we suggested that we take the time to do so at our own expense (without having a "customer" to pay the bill). The effort would probably require the better part of a year (or more) just because we no longer have the original authors availble to us, and we lack the documentation that describes the architecture.
Let this be a lesson to everyone else - you can NEVER have too much design and implementation documentation.

All,
I created an extension dll with VC++ 6.0. The application which uses this dll makes a function call
to the extension dll. Inside the dll a dialog box is created and shown using DoModal().
If I use a RELEASE version of the dll everything works correctly.
If I use a DEBUG version of the dll I get a DEBUG assertion:

The reason it doesn't fail in release mode is because ASSERTS don't do anything in release mode. I bet afxCurrentResourceHandle is still NULL.

Or even worse, some random, non-NULL value that will cause nasty problems someday, sometime.
Solution: understand the cause of the assertion, and fix it if necessary (which is almost always the case.)

Thanks for the quick responses....
I confirmed that in the Release version of the dll a proper resource handle is returned.
In the Debug dll the resource handle is NULL.
I saw an artical regarding loading of both mfc debug dlls and release dlls causing potential
problems.... not sure of that helps. The App is a release version provided by a third party vendor and the extension dll is written inhouse to act as an interface to our internal resources (data, calc engines etc.)
any insights would be appreciated

INTRODUCTION:
I'm developing a program that needs to read some information from another one.
I have been working using timers in order to get all the values each i Ms.
Reading the help of the new version of that program, I've seen that the manufacturers have added a method in wich I can use callback functions in order to get those values, let's say that I can get velues passing the addresses of that values:
>> FUNCTION PROTOTYPE:
void Callback(AmsAddr*, AdsNotificationHeader*, unsigned long);
>> FUNCTION CALL:
AdsSyncAddDeviceNotificationReq(pAddr, 0x4020, 0, &adsNotificationAttrib, Callback, hUser, &hNotification);
I would like to modify the number of callbacks to do using a configuration file (INI, CFG...) in order not to recompile all the code in each program that I will have to do. And I need to know:
QUESTIONS:
1. what happens if two variables change at the same time? can I use only a callback definition (prototype) and call it several times passing different variables adresses without worrying about "threading" problems?
2. in order to avoid problems, can I instantiate more than one function using only a function prototype?
3. Can I declare an array of functions that could depend of the number of variables that I would need to access in each different application?

There's some terminology confussion here. What is commonly called a prototype is the particular form (or signature) of a function, i.e. its arguments and return type. So these two functions have the same protoype:
int f(double x,int n);
int g(double y,int m); So, "instantiating a function" makes little sense. You can have one or several (as many as you want, for that matter) functions meeting a certain protoype. You cannot "instantiate" them at run-time: the functions you have are the functions you wrote in your code, period.
That said, for your particular problem I'd approach it like this: Have one callback function with the given prototype (let's call it Callback) and provide it as many times as you need to AdsSyncAddDeviceNotificationReq, specifying different "addresses" in each invocation. These addresses (and all of the other parameters if you like) can be retrieved from a .INI file without having to recompile the code. Now, in the code of Callback just do what you are supposed to based on the particular AsmAddr * passed, behaving as if there were no other notification requests registered. Everything will work fine as long as different invocations to Callback with different AsmAddr * parameters don't access common data.

Don't play with cs.Lock/cs.Unlock - it's not exception safe. Use CSingleLock instead - it takes care of locking.

I am desinging an application with a dialog box.
Can someone tell me how to load the string inside of a edit box to a combo box. Then after i update the data, how do i make it so that only while the application is running, it stores the current information in the combo box and after every time i change the value of the edit box string and press a button to add it to the combo box.;P

I have a bitmap resource in my application. Can somebody please wither explain to me how to make the bitmap disappear when clicking on a button or, give me sample code to do this.

I have it in a dialog window, it is a CStatic control. I have made a function that sorts through a small database of people and i also want their picture to show up that i have loaded in the resources. I dont know how to do that and im searching frantically to do so. So if i figure out how to do that, then i'll probably figure out how to make them disappear.

Try with m_yourBitmap.SetBitmap(IDB_BITMAP) to set the bitmap IDB_BITMAP as stored in your resources, and m_yourBitmap.SetBitmap(NULL) to clear it up. Remeber your CStatic has to have the SS_BITMAP style.

Hi!
I want to get the message when the left mouse button is down on a tree ctrl. But this tree ctrl is of type CTreeCtrl and not of any class derived from CTreeCtrl. So, when I add a handler for this message in the dialog that holds this tree ctrl, it doesn't recieve this message! It recives only when the left mouse is down on the dlg and not when it is down on the tree ctrl. How can I get this message when the left mouse button is down on the tree ctrl.
