We are in the initial stages of design analysis and I'm trying to come up
with some ideas on how to handle the feature our users are requiring from the
new application. We are using VB.NET/window forms
Feature Requested:
A user will be entering some data that will trigger an a notification event.
For example I am a research analyst entering a sell recommendation for a
stock. Once that action is preformed a notification should be sent the
portfolio manager and the traders. The portfolio managers and traders will
have a main screen and in the right hand corner they will have a grid that
will show the notification coming in real time from the research analysts,
traders and other portfolio managers. These real time notifications will
trigger the user to perform other tasks. Also these notifications need to be
stored in a sql db because if they shutdown the system they need to be able
to bring those notifications back up.
My question is how do I poll for new notifications on a real time basis and
have it not impact the users performance or have any other major downside
impacts on the environment. I was thinking of using a timer control and
making asynch calls to the queue table that will hold the notifications, but
I don't know if that is the best approach.

I looked at MSMQ and that was my first thought, but my data that I need to check for will be stored in a sql table. Plus when I think of MSMQ I think of it has a bridge between systems not a bridge between users utilizing the same system.

OK. I was thinking of a server component that reads the Messages, does the appropriate translations into the SQL database, signals any other processes that may be necessary, maybe does a little processing, and schedules return messages for outbound in another Message Queue.
MSMQ is not just for bridging systems, but is great for disconnected transaction based client-server systems (such as order processing). If the system is shut down, all the messages get queued up on the client until it's available again. Same with outbound messages...

I have a combobox populated with 1300+ names. I want to make it easier for my data entry clerk to enter the last name, and it pulls from the list.
I found the following link:

This knowledgebase article lists some code that doesn't work the way I need it. The code searches in the list for a name that matches and if so, it selects it. If not, it allows the client to type in a new name.
I need code to select only from the list and if you type something not on the list and backspace to retype, it picks up again.
Does anyone have some code suggestions or enhancements to this code that might help?
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi all,
Im having a bit of trouble displaying data from a field into a textbox. I should mention that this is a web application that is doing a select statement and then populating the data into a textbox. The problem is that one of the fields has spaces in it.
If i try to display the data into a text box using this code:
My Label
Only the first word of the sentence is coming up. Is there a reason for this and a way around it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Your question really belongs in the ASP.NET Forum since it really has nothing to do with VB/VB.NET.
Only the first word is showing up because once objRS() is evaluated, the HTML becomes:
<input TYPE=text NAME=txtield_nameF SIZE=50 VALUE=Whatever objRS returned here>
You might want to type enclosing the objRS() code in quotes:
<input TYPE=text NAME=txtield_nameF SIZE=50 VALUE="Whatever objRS returned here">
But, then again, I'm no expert in ASP...

Hi there can anyone provide me with code or example project that will allow me Logon Via a remote database or txt file e.g. Server sits in London and the Client sits in Edinburgh, I wont to enter a Username and Password in Edinburgh and the credentials are verified from a database or txt file in London.

Once the Username and Password has been verified from a database or txt file the logon form will close and allow you to continue with app.

Once again, what is the client logging into? An SQL Server, Windows Server, Linux box, what?

I think you thinking too deep, once i type in a username and password they are sent via TCP/IP or other method to the server(PC) were the usernames and passwords are stored if there is a match then the logon form will close.

Actually, you're not thinking deep enough. Are you connecting to a WebService, HTTP site, SQL Server, or are you going to be writing the Authentication Service for the server machine?
Each method has a radically different method of connection and communication. So, YES, it DOES matter!

If I cant explain it this time then forget it. Imagine 2 PCs on a LAN - PC1 has a text file containing a list of usernames and passwords with some sort off server app that reads that text file, PC2 has some sort of client app installed which has 2 text boxes one for Username and one for Password and a login button, when you enter a username and password and click login its send the username and password to PC1’s server app that app then reads the text file to see if the username and password exists the answer is then sent to PC’2 client app and a message box pops up says “User Found” or “User not Found”.

Finally! An answer we can use! I asked you a couple of posts ago:
are you going to be writing the Authentication Service
for the server machine?
and you never answered the question. Up until now, you never said if it was a component that some else wrote and your trying to use or if it was a component that you want to write. So, yes, your going to write both the server and the client pieces.
There's a bunch of different ways you can do this. But, what is going to work for you could be complicated by the path to the authentication server.
If your going to go over the Internet, you're undoubtedly going to go through a couple of firewalls, in which case a Web Service would be your best bet to get through those walls.
If your staying inside the company network, you could also run into firewalls that will can block you, especially between cities/sites like you are. Again, a Web Service would work, but .NET Remoting is also a possbility if your network won't prevent you from doing this. .NET Remoting will at least let you pick the ports you want to use, whereas WebServices run over standard HTTP.
Try reading Remoting and XML Web Services in Visual Basic .NET[^] for an introduction to both and see what you think.

That sounded to me like he was describing an ASP.NET application. IIS for the server and a webbrowser for the client.
