I want to upgrade my 98 machine to XP. I tested the system to see if its upgradable by running PCWorld's XPReady program. It says my PC meets all requirements for the upgrade except the BIOS.
It seems my system's BIOS is created earlier than Jan 1, 2000 and XP has a problem with that. How far is it true? Will XP fails to run if the system BIOS date is earlier than Jan 1, 2000??

Yes , some computers will need a updated bios in order to run xp.
The best thing to do is look at your bios version and then check to see if thier is a update availbe. This can all be found on the the manufacture of your mother board's website.

I discovered something new in Win2K Server last night. When I got home from a darts match late I jumped on the system (to see what's been happening at CP, of course) and, as usual, found a dark screen. This time, though, it wouldn't wake up. Keystrokes and mouse activity were uniformly ignored! Fortunately, restarting didn't damage anything, but it easily could have. The screen was in sleep mode, and I couldn't hear any disk activity, so I felt there was little risk of loss, but pushing the reset button was still spooky.
Has anyone else heard of this being a problem in Win2K? As a side-note, when I restarted I disabled BIOS power management just to ensure there would be no conflict with WIndows, but that put it into a continuous reboot loop. Re-enabling BIOS power management allowed it to restart normally.

I have a Professional Edition and during its 2nd Stand By Mode (Standy By, then Wake Up, then Stand By), it never wakes up.
For now, no more Stand By's ...

i have a task to open a directory on another pc in the LAN ,this directory is shared with password,and i dont want to display dialogue for user to click . i dont know how to do this ,anybody help me?

NET USE \\hostname\sharename password
Tack on /PERSISTENT:YES if you want it to be a lasting connection. At a command prompt, type NET USE /? for a list of other options.

I don't know about the Windows API - I've just begun playing with it, but this command can be put into a batch file and run from the startup folder. I used to use a variation of the NET command this way to sync all my client PCs to the same time using the server's current time setting.
One drawback is that it can leave a Command Prompt window open on completion. Adding a second command to the batch file of EXIT should close the DOS window.

Does anybody know what a VFAT bluescreen on startup of Windows 95 means, I am trying to get an older computer to work for somebody but it won't let me start up. I got into scandisk via command prompt and fixed all the errors but it still won't start. Thanks if you can give me more info.

I'm assuming it won't boot in safe mode either, so the error is probably nothing to do with the Windows not recognizing the disk.
Things to find out:
Did you partition and format the system, or was it already done?
Did you install/re-install Windows, or was it already installed?
What version of Windows95 is installed?
Make sure the versions all match (i.e., it wasn't formatted with a later version than the one installed, etc.).
That's all i've got... this is usually where i dig out the installation CD

So basically since this isn't my computer and they were already thinking of just scrapping it I should deem it unrecoverable is what you are saying

It was my mom's old work computer and worked fine(just old) and her boss bought it for a little email and word processing and she got it home and it was dead.

Well... if it stopped working after being moved, it could be a hardware problem. (yeah, DOS doesn't have problems, but it's DOS...) Check for loose IDE cables, etc. If hardware such as CD drives, etc. was removed, make sure the master/slave settings are still correct. But given that it is an old machine, the likelyhood that the HD is just plain going is not too bad.

AOA!
As u know that in FTP these days the restart feature(resuming an incomplete download) is very much necessary.
In FTP specification i have read that restart can only be supported when the transfer mode is either BLOCK or COMPRESSED. But IIS supports REST command which is used for restarting an incomplete transfer.
now i want to use IIS 5.0 on the server side and also give restart feature in the client application communicating with IIS, but IIS doesnt support either BLOCK or COMPRESSED MODE (REF:MSDN Jan 2002)
Can Anyone give me a better idea about how to get around this problem,so taht i can give restart feature on the client side ?

The E drive in my system is not getting recognised and it is giving the
following message when clicked on the E drive.
The volume does not contain recognied file system.Please make sure that all the required file system drivers and that the volue is not corrupt.
What is the solution to this?How can I recover my data?

Don't use Apache as it does not support active server pages, and several other things.
I'm not sure if you can run IIS on Win Me (I run it in XP Pro). If not then get an up to date copy of Personal Web Server by Microsoft (probably PWS4 on the Visual Studio 6 J++ Disc).

I'd avoid PWS like the plague (as does my friend who ran a website of PWS until I demonstrated to him that I could read any file on his HDD, or crash his machine using the correct urls), and if someone just wants to host a simple site, then I doubt the lack of ASP will be problem (Apache supports CGI fine)

I have been working on a Service that is essentially a web server, I have gotten the server code to work in other non-service apps, but when I start the service it doesn't stop or give errors suggesting that it is running but when ever I try to view a page it just gives me a cannot find server error. The account the server is logged in as is Computer Administrator. Can anyone help me?

A long shot but if your using a proxy server normally insure that you've got the settings setup to bypass the proxy for local addresses.
