Hi,
Due to business requirements, I have to have something like a process to run all the time to retrieve data and do processing with it...
My first guess is to create a windows service so that it can be started and be left running.

Question:
Is windows service the best choice for my requirement or can I have a wcf i.e. .svc file to do the same thing i.e. (get started and be left running all the time). ?

Yes - a windows service is what you need.

A WCF service is for communications between a two clients or a client and a server. You would use a WCF service *inside* your Windows service.

I would like to return the data to the GUI from the windows service.
1- Should the GUI call WCF which gets the data from window service?
OR
2- Should the GUI just call the windows service to get the data?

The windows service shouldn't return the data, it should store the data locally, and send out a system-wide message that new data is available. If a desktop application is running that knows about the message, it can then load the data from the local source.

This is an inappropriate question. He'll get better, but the question is whether or not we'll all live to see it. There's no reason to ban him, and foltering users in a programming forum is a bad idea.

There is a fully working .net windows application which uses the background worker process in the form.

Using my new silverlight 4 application, I now would like to make it use the functionalities as the application in the winform i.e. background worker, etc...

Question:
As I am using the wcf to retrieve data and pass to the silverlight page, how/where do I use the background worker process? Do I use it in the service or in the silverlight page?

Probably depeneds on what the background was doing in the windows forms application.
Was it something to do with the UI - it will go into the Silverlight UI.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

If you are retrieving the data using WCF, then you are already refreshing the data asynchronously. This renders the need to read the data in using a background worker, moot - after all, your UI will still be responsive while the data is being fetched.

Not if you are already retrieving the data asynchronously (which you are using RIA services). As a test, write a simple data method to return a single integer from the server side but give it a delay of one minute before it returns. When you call this method, your UI will still remain responsive.
