My job should be pretty safe, but even then... I don't have any fear.
Either I would find something else, or I would start something on my own.

If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about?
Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you

Just started a new position this year at the same employer where I've been for 34 years. I feel secure as company actively recruited me. If anything goes wrong, I'll just retire. This is an advantage to being an old fart.

I was lucky, being made redundant at 61, when plenty of those much younger than me were being shown the door. It just meant retiring four years early.

What are these shake-ups that the survey question refers to? I'm too deep under a rock to hear much news these days.

I was wondering as well...
I suspect that while IT seems pretty good, other industry are experiencing raising employment issues?!

I am watching trends and watching and listening. Keeping an ear open and trying to be prepared for what might happen at any moment.

The people I work for are not real software people so working here is more like working
on a plant floor. We don't have time clocks - but could. Developers (3) are discouraged
from talking to one another during the day, no after hour associations, no holiday get
togethers; come to work, do eight hours, go away till tomorrow.
So even though I am doing a good job on code that is a nightmare of mish-mash twenty year
old C mismanaged for more than a decade I have no idea what my boss's boss thinks of my job
and he controls everything.
Since I am the fifth or sixth person in two years to do this - all the others quit after less
time than I've been here - I assume they don't want to try to hire someone else and "train"
them on this mess. Maybe state like this: my security is based more on how painful it would
be to replace me than actual job performance.
But if my boss's boss has a bad day... things could change in a hurry.

|
I am now the boss and could never stand for such a situation.

I have been the boss a few times too - fixed these situations when I was in a position
to fix them. Here... I am but an egg.
I am past retirement age and don't really need to work... I like coding. How do you
retire from something you like doing? The place is near home, in Atlanta close to home
is a big deal. Normally, I would not have considered this job, old creepy ugly C code
mangled by a collection of not-so-good coders who did not care to do a good job.
The pay is good, commute is good, and the work itself could be fun - so I am here.

also where the neutral option
"OK" - "not sure"
life is life, I know can get another job if need be, and a break would be welcomed, got finances none issue.
or the 20 year pessimist option: they praised me last week, and given a bonus 😲they going to fire me tomorrow😖
|
|
|
|
|
I believe Quote: I'm not sure how things are in my current position is the neutral option. Then you have three shades of feeling good or confident, and three shades of feeling like your time is short, and finally, the already retired option.

The alternative "I'm feeling OK" gave me associations to my current favorite jazz vocalist: Angelina Jordan: Feeling Good[^]

Are you going to help make that happen by contributing to our retirement funds?

You've been reading too much Pippi Longstocking!
(For those of you who do not know Pippi: She is the creation of Astrid Lindgren, a Swedish author of children's books. Pippi is nine years old, super strong, has a big sack full of gold coins and lives by herself with her horse and her monkey. She is the epitome of a free spirit, doing whatever she wants, completely ignoring any objections. When she learns from her playmates that their school will soon have a vacation, she gets crossed because she doesn't get any vacation. She decides to start going to school, so that that she will have vacation, too ... Wikipedia: Pippi Longstocking[^])

... that I'm about to fire myself and outsource my job to China - but you know how these rumours go around an office ...
My job is at least as secure as Liz Trusses. Hang on, I'd better just check the news; I haven't seen it for a few days ...

When the next PM Manuk will have done the "Dirty Harry job" to clean up the mess in GB than Boris Johnson will spin some intrigue. But for now BJ knows that he will loose getting PM.
