Thanks I forgot about that.
I went back and wipped up a Win32_OperatingSystem app and checked again.
And got this.

I just noticed something which might as well explain the name "Windows 10" ...
You could even regard the Version as Major + Minor to get a more or less accurate naming scheme
6.1 => 6+1 => Windows 7
6.2 => 6+2 => Windows 8
6.3 => 6+3 => 6 + 2 + 1 => Windows 8 + 1 => Windows 8.1 (thus Windows 9 was actually Windows 8.1 )
6.4 => 6+4 => Windows 10
But anyways. I think Microsoft said they won't increase the major version anymore as long as they don't really break the backwards compatibility. They last increase was from XP to Vista and it rendered a lot of software incompatible just because they were checking for the major OS version (without actually having any reason to do so). What Microsoft basically tells us is: "Most software written for Windows Vista upwards should work on Windows 10 without issues" [citation needed]. (And I don't think that's a bad thing)
(insert conspiracy theories here)

Just like any new version some stuff just is not used anymore.
When I tried WMI Win32_ OperatingSystem created on Vista and ran it on Windows 10 it threw a error.
Either a name was changed in the property or it is was no longer used in Win 10.
Small things like that will change. Along with the underlying C/C++ being depreciated.
I've Tested my programs made on Vita in 7, 8 8.1 and now 10.
The only problem is that the .Net framework 3.5 is not installed by default in 8 & 10
I think you figured out the way the versions were chosen.

If I'm going to spend many hours at the terminal I'll be damned if I'm going to look at their ugly [Marc]etch-a-sketch[/Marc] UI. I hate it and I'll either outlive the fad and wait till they do or die.

I'll have an opinion when I actually try it. So far, I've only seen a couple of screenshots.

I have a few times. I expect by sometime in the 2030s they will have recreated the windows 95 experience.

Yeah, that's what I figured.
I think they're wasting way too many resources on the userland UI i.e. Windows Explorer etc.
I just want to be able to run Windows applications in a no frills environment. There are lots of better window managers than Windows Explorer.
I use Windows Embedded when building kiosks that need to run Windows applications, but even it take something like 5GB for a minimal install.

Haven't checked the website for a year, and seems little changed over there.
I've had more luck using OpenSUSE and Wine. No longer an active player, but have been Warcrafting some time with it. Doesn't install the .NET framework, but there's Mono for that. Since Mono also brings a WinForm UI, it has all I need.
..except Visual Studio.

A fraction of the size of anything since
Faster than anything since
Simpler deployment and management
You can buy an Advanced Server license for a few buck including 25 seats

Not great for gamers, but I do actually still use it to build Active Directory domain controllers for pennies on the dollar.
Unfortunately I do have to use Windows 8 because I need to target .net 4.x and Windows Store

Full of unpached security holes. I like Win2000 a lot, but installing it nowadays is simply irresponsible, especially the server.

If you firewall it with IPSec and only open up the required ports for AD, it's as secure as anything since. You're essentially exposing a proven LDAP, Kerberos, and DNS server.
If you sysadmin starts surfing the web on it, yes, you're screwed.

I used 2K for a long time and didn't want to give it up but when I finally did go to XP it was awesome also!

that feature alone i miss the most, if i remember right a minimal install was under 100mb (correct me if i'm wrong, it's been awhile).
it was very stable, and didn't have any of the UI fluff we've gotten used to, making it quick. it was ideal for disconnected world, but times have changed .

This is essentially Windows 7 with the speed of 8.x due to the stripped GUI ( no 3d or n' suff);
Fast as a scalded cat and completely usable both at work and play.
We can feed this to our flock.

ReFS[^] is MS's entrant in the next generation FS competition (vs ZFS and BTRFS). It was first offered as a not-recommended for production public preview for server 2012; 8.1 x64 brought it to the client space. However the initial version had a lot of caveats and missing feature checkboxes vs the competition. So I'm curious if some of the limitations have been removed/boxes checked, or if there've been any performance changes since the initial version was tested 2 years ago.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Microsoft is really loosing customers interest with its lagging operating systems on the phone/tablet and PC.
It is the first time in over 20 years I am really not interested or focused on their bananaware.

Windows 8 already did that for me. Actually, it was not the silly product itself, but the many little changes they made to push us into the 'right' direction. I'm not going to invest any more time in a platform where my work can become obsolete before it's even finished.
