For Preventing my page to refreshed on button click and hit a query to insert a value in database what should i do ?

I am creatiog buttons at runtime from codebehind , on button click i
have to insert a value in a Flag vield in sqlserver table ...

I DONT WANT -- " my page to get refreshed on the button click as there are around 50 buttons in my webpage ,and user can click on as many as he likes"

WHAT CAN I DO CAN PLEASE HELP

1 >> Can i do this by using Update panel of Asp.net without Ajax ?
if NO please Mention how can i do this

use ajax.updatepanel..it'll refresh only required place..
