I've read that Enterprise customers are able to side-load their own "Metro" applications without having to go through the Windows Store. That's one positive, but it's extremely saddening that regular consumers cannot have the same benefit.

I'm wondering though, if there's a way for me to side-load onto a tablet I own (obviously don't own one yet - just planning for the future) to test code that I'm writing myself... or maybe to install an open source application that I downloaded the source of and compiled myself. Has Microsoft announced any way for developers to test their code on an ARM tablet, since they'll be actually developing on an x86 or x64 version of Windows?

I asked a MS person this question as well and they said that you should be able to side-load on an ARM tablet. That it will be supported. But without one in my hands I can't tell you how to do that yet. Was not able to pick one up this morning.

You can sideload LOB Windows Store apps apps on devices running Windows RT and on devices running Windows Server 2012, Windows 8 Enterprise, or Windows® 8 Pro. Distributing apps outside store is possible after complying to the prerequisites listed in this MSDN article(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh852635.aspx). In this article, it gives step by step instruction on how to do slidloading by using PowerShell.
