Of course you can, but why?

In a way, laptop is no different from any other computer with corresponding hardware specifications, but is built with very different goals in mind. A good laptop (should I say "notebook computer"?) is pretty tolerant to tough handling, moving the lid and carrying it around every day, switching on/off, changing power sources; it uses less energy; and it is more compact and light weight. For this features, you pay extra money.

Now, if you take a notebook/laptop computer after someone's everyday use and put it into production as a server, of course it will work. But in this case you are not using its extra features, so your new uses will not stop justifying you past investment.

At the same time, chances are, this computer is less powerful that you need for a server, and is practically not extendable. A typical modern blade-type rack-mounted industrial server computer can add disk volume without shutting it off, has good room for extensions, it has lower cost per performance but it can be too loud and uses more energy. It usually don't have advanced video cards, as its major use is command line or through secure network connection. If has higher reliability and lifetime under the condition of long-term non-stop use. Due to all these reasons, its design goals and hence the design is different from both desktop and portable machines.

[EDIT] In particular, backup requires extra reliability and plenty of storage. Laptop is not adequate, really. [END EDIT]

So, what you want is only good for temporary use.

I have a network attached drive-4TB to store the data, the laptop is always on to run window services at the specified time.

the investment is very small $400. only backup software is installed.
it is only used to run jobs and nobody uses it. it will be on 24 hours each day, 7 days a week.

the workload is very small since we are a small start up. when time comes we may use blade server, but not this time.

I just listed and explained the factors, you decide. Any company, even a small one needs some minimal server power. By they way, you do backup, but do you have revision control system and issue management system? You need it from the very beginning...

Anyways, are you going to accept this answer formally (green button)?

SA-

Thank you. We do have version control system and bug tracking system.
they are in clouds. my final approach may be a desktop with windows 7 and set up a server running always.

in future if the time comes in, we can install windows server on it and extend its power.

Great, good luck,

a simple reason: I don't think that a win 7 OS could be up 24/7 ( a win server or a linux system would be more reliable ! we are not going to discuss the workload !!!
If you're talking about backing up to the laptop, that's a REALLY bad idea.

Hi,

I don't suggest you that, that won't be effiscient.

Best Regards.

Indeed, no explanations in this answer, but isn't it obvious? OK, please see my answer for explanations.

Hi,

when you choose any server, you need to consider so many things like,

1) Server Memory ,CPU or other Hardware configuration.
2) Power backup utility
3) Network Bandwidth.
4) Your OS version , like Home Edition is not preferable and Enterprise Edition is good for your need.
5) you need all license version software.

and may be more thinks you need to configure before publishing your website.

hope this information will help you,

Thanks
-Amit.
