it returned a valid handle in each case. Beyond that I have not tested anything.
=> I also get this far, but the actual detail shown in the event log viewer shows failure. That's the key issue here.

That worked for me for a couple of different key names.
=> Weird.
Have you check your Event log viewer's Preview for an event detail? Even if the ReportEvent returns TRUE, the event viewer's preview says: it failed to find ....

That is not clear at all and from regedit I can see many nested registry subkeys under EventLog. For example, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\OAlerts\Microsoft Office 16 Alerts.
So my initial question is not cleared yet unfortunately.
I hope someone can shed light on this issue.

I already did but that doesn't help me at all regarding this issue.

Unfortunately, it does not work that way. ReportEvent fails to find the event source such as "MyCustLog\\App1".
Could you check on you end please?

Thanks for the quick answer.

I want to make sure one more time.
If I want to use the first one,

HANDLE hEvtSrc = RegisterEventSource(0, "App1");

If I want to use the second one,

HANDLE hEvtSrc = RegisterEventSource(0, "MyCustLog\\App1");

If I want to use the third one,

HANDLE hEvtSrc = RegisterEventSource(0, "3rdPartyLog\\App1");

Please confirm.

[1] Create a COM exe singleton server and register it.
[2] Run a client to CoCreateInstance(CLSCTX_ACTIVATE_32BIT_SERVER)
[3] On windows 7 64 bit, it will work ok. In Windows xp, it will give you E_INVALID_ARG. But MSDN says it will simply be ignored on Windows xp, not E_INVALID_ARG error.
