Could anyone provide some insight into the appropriate naming convention for developing extensions to third party applications? The main thing I am concerned with is the legality of using another company name or product name in my namespace.

Assume for a minute I am working for a company, "My Company". I am developing an extension for an application named "Some Application" made by "The Other Company". My instincts tell me that something along the lines of this would be the most appropriate:

MyCompany.TheOtherCompany.SomeApplication.TheNameOfTheExtension

I know we are mostly coders, not lawyers, but does anyone know if this is legal, and not generally frowned upon?

My advice is to let you company's people talk to the other company's people. If you pose your question to them, and they say it's okay, go for it.

It the other company asked you to write the extension, it's probably okay, but I would still get your own lawyers involved.
