Creating Line Nos column in the Notepad GUI

Please can someone help me with this. I'm trying to create a programming Notepad but I'm finding it difficult to create the 'Line Nos' Column. The actual functionality i need is for it to scroll in line with the 'Textbox' where the programmer writes code. I'm trying to control 2 'Textboxes' with one scroller (if you get the idea) but that's not working (1 textbox to hold the line nos and the other for writing code). I tried using a 'Split Panel' but it didn't work either. Any ideas?

Both your ideas will work, if properly executed. focus on one idea, and post the code you have trouble with, and ask specific questions.
