EDI stands for Electronic Data Interchange

It is a format for specific documents (Purchase Order, Invoice) which creates a standard so that two businesses can exchange documents electronically.

There are rules for EDI and for individual document types so that if your company needs to receive Purchase Orders electronically then you can write standard software that knows how to parse the document to obtain the data you need.

This allows the exchange of data without human intervention (automates the process).

There are even parts to the system which can identify the incoming document such as a PO and then do a turnaround to return an Invoice document with the related line items which have appeared on the PO.

Just as XML is a data format type, EDI is a similar thing but created before XML.

This has been an overview and my terms may not be exact.
