Try your local library: they can often order books from libraries all across the country, or even purchase special ones if asked nicely.

Addison Wesley, Wrox, and Microsoft press all do good books - but not free - just avoid any with "In NNN Days!", multiple exclamation marks, or "For Dummies" in the title.

Here is links to references books on C and C++ by the authors of the languages. Note than C is the ancestor of C++, so knowing C is always useful with C++.
