The function definition in haskell

hi, could you please explain the declaration below?
I am trying to understand but this one is not intuitive to me.

add :: Integer -> Integer -> Integer   --function declaration 
add x y =  x + y                       --function definition

why we cannot write (Integer, Integer) -> Integer ?
