Invalid connection in SQL Server 2000

I am trying to connect SQL Server 2000, where I am facing the following issue,

Unable to connect to server XXXXXXXXX:
Server: Msg 14, Level 16, State 1
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB] Invalid connection.

What cause this error? what would be the solution for the above issue?
