Hai All,

I plan to buy a new laptop for my carrier development purpose. But I have lots of confusion to choose the best laptop. Some of the friends told me to go with DELL, HP and etc.. some of them don't go with DELL.

Still I am in confusion.. Anyone can help to buy a laptop(brand and model) for me. I like to use most of the latest software like Windows 7/Vista/XP, VS2010, VS2008, SQL Server 2005, Oracle 9i, My SQL 5.0, Crystal Report...

Thanks in Advance..

Regards,
Gokula.

This will be a dangerous question!

It might depend on a number of things - your location, your budget and your requirements.

VB
Windows 7/Vista/XP, VS2010, VS2008, SQL Server 2005, Oracle 9i, My SQL 5.0, Crystal Report...

You are looking at 3-4 GB RAM requirements here.
Anything less than that would not be optimal.

Hard disk - at least 250GB - anything more than that is a bonus.

Your choice of brand would come in only after you decide your budget and specs and then do some more analysis on these various brands.

I think this is more of a discussion topic than a quick question/answer. I would suggest you to post the same here: CP Lounge[^].

People would share their experience and you might get a good discussion/suggestion regarding the same.

The question needs threaded discussion.

As I am seeing that you're Indian you will not be comfortable with Lounge at first. Visit GIT[^] and post a question there, So that people will tell you their own experience on same.

BTW I am using DELL and it's up to the mark, I will suggest you to go with that.

Purchase Intel not AMD processor and look cache memory capacity.

Dell :
Dell have best customer support.
During the warranty period they will come to your home for trouble shoot as absolutely free..otherwise you should pay.
you can purchase it through online without from any third party ...
There is a scheme accident insurance .If your lap damaged fully don't worry they will replace it .Also they provide windows 7 license CD's and drivers .
Dell Studio is best option and Xps .

Disadvantage :

Hardware problem will occur .
Sound comparitively less in Studio model .

HP:
Good Hardware support.Rough use possible and good sound.

I have a 4 year old Dell laptop and have never had a hardware problem; so your stats are off by a mile.

AMD processors ain't that bad, there are AMD processors which are better Intel and they are not pricey too.

This is my experience ...
You'll need lots and lots of RAM
Windows 7/Vista/XP? On tha same machine? guess you are going to use virtual PCs

SQL Server 2005, Oracle 9i, My SQL 5.0? Three sql servers

VS2010, VS2008 has a serious appetite for memory too.

My guess is you won't be happy with less than 8GB ram, and as a developer you are probably going to wish for at least 7200 rpm disks

Have you thought about RAID? loosing your work can be a pain in the ...

Think it through - a cheap machine is likely, in time, to cost you a lot - loss of data/work probably being the most likely thing to occur.

Buy an abacus.
Hire a friend so you have spare fingers.
Pen and paper even.

These are all better options than DELL!

Buy something that is sturdy, resilient and reliable.
Or spec your own.

Dell build to the cheapest they can get away with.
