Not as far as I know - SATA requires a different chipset and fast access to the memory system to be of any use. PATA had a max throughput of 133 MB/s, while SATA starts at 150MB/s and goes up from there.

You can buy SATA cards which plug into PCI / PCIe slots, and it may be possible to find an old SATA / IDE card (but I've never seen one).

You can get external readers which allow you to slot a PATA or SATA disk in, and connect via USB (I have one for "quarantined" HDD's I need to get data off of). But you can't boot from that to the best of my knowledge - and it would be horrifically slow.

Me? I'd upgrade the MB with a cheap second hand i5 ...

Ebay - I did recently.
What is your definition of a Prehistoric MB?
1. Are there any available slots, such as PCI or Express?
2. Do you known MB manufacturer and model?

Is this StarTech adapter viable for you? If not, please give a better description of what exactly you need.

Short answer: No, mostly because IDE/PATA is not in use anymore.

Back in time, some MB have had both connectors, IDE and SATA, but now they are old.
There was also some controller PCI cards for IDE/PATA and for SATA, depending on needs.
Some USB devices are also able to connect to IDE HDD.

what does it looks like

If you have an IDE HDD, the large connector is the IDE plug.
