Do packages provide encapsulation, if not what is the difference

What I have tried:

I'm in my first year programming class, and was taught Encapsulation is basically, hiding variables by making the access modifier private, but do packages basically do the same thing than ? I am unsure because we usually write our homework in one class, and we never use packages
