Lately I've been using timers daily. By that I mean timeouts, for example 20 minutes: Start at 20 minutes, Slowly goes down to 0. But it mostly makes sense if I add a visual widget for it. So I built one baked into my wm. I call my "timer" a "nagger" and use it via a shell nagme() function.

That happens me quite often, but a reset of the wireless at the cell phone solves it 99% of the times.

Reading that post, I can't help but think, things are way more complicated than they need to be.
Maybe I'm just an old deprecated developer, but whatever happened to just wires and chips to connect things, rather than all this bloated Unix software in every device?

I'm sorry, but I must disagree in part.
A full-blown Unix (or Linux) system is overkill for many tasks, but paring it down to the bare minimum is surprisingly difficult. How do you handle the case of a router that also provides printer and storage ports? At the very least you need:
- Networking services
- Printing services incl. spooling
- Disk I/O
- Auto-mounting for filesystems
- Sharing (possibly incl. security)
And to manage all of this, the easiest tool to implement is a Web interface, so we need a Web server as well
About the only thing you definitely don't need is a graphical desktop!
