GitHub recently experienced several availability incidents, both long running and shorter duration. We have since mitigated these incidents and all systems are now operating normally. When I woke up today around 6:45 AM PDT, I didn’t seem to have internet service available. My phone told me that I was connected to my Wi-Fi network, but it didn’t have connectivity. “Hmm, that’s weird,” I thought. Unfortunately by the time this news comes to you, you've probably already suffered through a solution.

That happens me quite often, but a reset of the wireless at the cell phone solves it 99% of the times.

Reading that post, I can't help but think, things are way more complicated than they need to be.
Maybe I'm just an old deprecated developer, but whatever happened to just wires and chips to connect things, rather than all this bloated Unix software in every device?

I'm sorry, but I must disagree in part.
A full-blown Unix (or Linux) system is overkill for many tasks, but paring it down to the bare minimum is surprisingly difficult. How do you handle the case of a router that also provides printer and storage ports? At the very least you need:
- Networking services
- Printing services incl. spooling
- Disk I/O
- Auto-mounting for filesystems
- Sharing (possibly incl. security)
And to manage all of this, the easiest tool to implement is a Web interface, so we need a Web server as well
About the only thing you definitely don't need is a graphical desktop!

Google Analytics was the go-to analytics tool. It set the standard, we all learned on it, and we all used it. But Google Analytics 4? It’s a nightmare. I’ve tried to figure it out for weeks and it’s just…confusing. GA4: "Come with me if you want to live and lose some of your historical GA data."

Because you're not an idiot. I was talking to a friend the other day about this very thing. Students can just drop a query in and let the report be generated. People are working on AI to detect AI generated papers. It goes on and on...
Years ago, I worked in electronic warfare. It was always a responsive environment - reminds me of this.
The sad part is - and I hope at least one student reads this - the purpose of papers is to force you to research, learn, teach yourself, organize your thoughts. You NEED this training. Don't go to the dark side.

I've worked with people from places where cultural pressures to succeed in school far outweigh any ethics. Get to a certain point regardless of how is somewhat standard operating procedure unfortunately. I witnessed this many years ago in college.

Completely agree. My point was that real knowledge >> grades. My best classes were where I got a B or a C but busted my butt. We will see the results of this over time. But I'm approaching the end of my career.
A very long time ago I worked with a s/w guy who came across as whip smart. He knew all about Windows. I had to write the code to simulate a linear feed back line.

I hope this idiot gets fired for this move, even if he's tenured. The firing would be for flagrant academic misconduct, which is about the only way to fire a tenured professor.

Astronomers have discovered 62 new moons orbiting the ringed planet Saturn.

Guidance enables you to control modern language models more effectively and efficiently than traditional prompting or chaining. Guidance programs allow you to interleave generation, prompting, and logical control into a single continuous flow matching how the language model actually processes the text. Part of me can't help but feel like this is essentially reinventing the concept of programming languages: formal and precise syntax to perform specific tasks with guarantees.

Formal and precise syntax... are you sure that's the correct definition? Looking to some of the "languages" that are out there...

I like to write, and occasionally I idly consider the possibility that I should do it for a living. Then I remind myself: writing is a structurally terrible job. Whatever dreams you have of living off of big checks from Random House and Vanity Fair: crush them now. Yea, but in all those Hallmark movies those writers have nice apartments in big cities and travel to exotic locations and then publish their own book at the end. Hallmark doesn't like, right?
