I am a former professional software developer (now a system admin) with an interest in everything that is about making hardware work. In the course of my work, I have programmed device drivers and services on Windows and linux.

I have written firmware for embedded devices in C and assembly language, and have designed and implemented real-time applications for testing of satellite payload equipment.

Generally, finding out how to interface hardware with software is my hobby and job.

My first suggestion would be: don't Smile | :)

But there are a couple of things you can do. The first is to use an admin account to take ownership of that key and add full control for the administrators group.

If that doesn't work or you'd rather not do that, there is a fairly simple workaround which I have used in a similar circumstance to modify the permissions for a scheduled task in the registry which by default can only be changed by system. The trick is to create a scheduled task that executes a command, and have that scheduled task execute as 'SYSTEM'. If you make a script or program to perform your change and execute it like that, there should be no problem.

It's a bit of a bother because you have to create and remove the task, but it's simple, it works, and it leaves no lasting security change.
