After working in IT Field for more than 5+ years, what I think is that we need to find something which will impact society highly.
Just like scientists, one invention change the world.

The first priority is to keep my job, of course, because I have some hefty bills to pay - TWO students to feed and house, on top of the usual.
But I can afford to be picky these days, so I demand that a task is interesting for me. It has to be challenging to do and fun, and it has to add a good line to my CV. A job has to teach me something new.
Plus the colleagues have to be nice. If they're swine then I will change jobs, been there done that. As a rule softies are intelligent and eccentric, just like me! A pleasant environment is important too. here we are in the middle of some lovely countryside, with a big lake to walk by in the lunch break.
The canteen has priority too, one reason I would not go back the the UK is the canteen serving boiled cabbage (do they still do that?).
But actually, if they stopped paying me or if I won the lotto (maybe I should buy a ticket) I would stop working right now, go home, care for my garden and play the sax.

Yes, I am. As a 20+ year veteran of contracting I can say the money comes first: without that I wouldn't look any further. After that... project needs to be interesting and using the most up to date tools and technologies.
Any contractor that says they don't work for the money is a liar.

I agree with what you have said here, however I answered flexibility. The money is what allows you to have that flexibility.

I guess perception changes with Age: Right now the current state of mind is to write robust & scalable code. But once i am no longer single, then priorities might change.

There are various things in life which one can consider blessings.
Aside from astounding good looks and the ability to lick my eyebrows*, I've been blessed with being paid to have fun almost my entire working life.
* Being able to lick one's eyebrows is a better way to attract women then good looks or even money . . . done in good taste, of course.

I checked almost everything on that list, except getting out of software development. I love making software and can't imagine doing something else.

Working on projects that matter to me and projects that make a difference, to me these two tie together . If it matters to me it’s because I know I can make a difference.
The work environment and colleagues I have met some very smart and very likable people where I work and it’s a great feeling when through team effort we make products that save lives and or make poeples lives better. The company I work for is one of the few left that actually gives a darn about its employees. It’s not always peaches and cream, but compared to other places, I have it made.
And finally the money, I like to make a difference but I also like to live comfortably support my family and have time (and money) for my hobbies.

I think I was surprised at the number of people who selected money as top priority. To me this implies that their hearts aren't in what they do. I don't mean to imply that the work done isn't good code or bad, it's just that in my limited experience, those who enjoy what they do, come up with very creative solutions as opposed to those do it becuase they have to and let everyone else know how much they dislike it. (I think we all work with "that" guy)
I like money as much as the next guy, but if you're not happy or hate your job, what good is it? I'll take a little less money if it means a little less stress.

After 5 yrs of experience, i would have wife and kids (or maybe after 2 more yrs) to look after apart from my parents. So definitely money.
Everything else can be taken care of before getting 5-6 years experience.

I've worked in places where that wasn't right, and it makes all the other things on the list matter a lot less. I was laid off out of one such situation, and it was horrible the day of the first day, but within the first week I realized it was the best thing that could have happened.
After that it's triangle between money, flexibility and project interest (or more acuratelly the project's disinterest). If it's going to be less money it's going to need to be more flexible and/or more interesting. If it's going to be less flexible the other two parts must increase.
Of course there comes a point where the project is so boring, inflexible or cheap that the other two sides can't make up for it.
