I am developing an enterprise application and I am still not sure if I should use DHTML or Silverlight.
I have some concerns regarding Silverlight's security because it is a
client-side applications.
Does anyone who have experienced with Silverlight applications can answer this?

Silverlight is no more or less "client-side" than DHTML[^]. DHTML is a term to cover a bunch of technologies that includes a client side scripting language (javascript).
If you are concerned about a particular part being done on the client, just do it on the server.
Silerlight uses the .net runtime (in the form of a silverlight plugin for the browser), whereas a DHTML app would use a javascript runtime embedded in the browser. Both are rather easy to reverse engineer, so I wouldn't really worry about one being more secure than the other.
My pro's and con's for each tech would be as follows:
Silverlight
Pros -
Nice pretty UI, animations, etc.
Can potentially share UI XAML markup with desktop apps.
Cons -
Limited client support[^]
Requires browser plugin.
DHTML
Pros -
Supported on almost all clients.
Cons -
Varying browser support for features often requires 'tweaking'.

Neither. I assume by "enterprise" you mean "I have full control of the operating environment", which means to me "stop messing around with web apps and just deploy a forms app with OneClick".

here creation is getting failed.The return error code is 10047(Address family not supported by protocol family). In my device the bluetooth is turn ON. Can any body help me why i am not able to creat bluetooth socket. please help me.

Hi,
I've subclassed the standard System.ComponentModel.Design.ArrayEditor to allow me to edit a ushort[] property in the VS2005 visual designer's property grid. I've added a UITypeEditor attribute to the property specification and my subclassed type editor is invoked correctly by the designer.
I need to display/edit the ushort[] array elements in hex. I already have a hex TypeConverter that works fine, my problem is how to invoke it for the array elements?
Any ideas would be most welcome.

I have an application that behaves as a SOAP server, using the ChannelServices::RegisterChannel and RemotingConfiguration::RegisterWellKnownServiceType calls.
Although my SOAP service will not be called intensively by clients, it is still possible that it gets a burst of a few hundreds of calls at the same time.
Problem is that the logic in the SOAP service typically take 5 to 10 seconds, and cannot be executed in parallel (complex mathematical calculations, results of one SOAP call may influence the results of later SOAP calls, it's a bit difficult to explain all the underlying details of it).
In normal situations this is not a problem since the SOAP timeout is typically about 100 seconds.
However, if I get a burst of 100 SOAP calls at the same time, some of them will get a timeout (which is acceptable). The real problem is that I cannot see in the server that the client has got a timeout, which means that the server will go on performing its calculations (or the calculations needed for the SOAP call will be queued) even if the client is not there anymore, and the results cannot be sent to it anymore.
If I would be able to see that the client is not there anymore, I could abort the calculations, or I could remove the pending calculations from the queue again.
I've looked in the .Net API but I haven't found a way yet to see if the client is still there or not.
Is there an easy way to obtain this information?
Or should I start to investigate asynchronously SOAP calls, or any other complex concept?
Any code examples that might help?

I had a similar issue where I needed to calculate machine collision data on demand, which took a few seconds. This taking a few seconds means that the data doesnt need to be that fresh (as its going to take a while to calculate anyway). I'm assuming that if the client can be happy with a timeout on the call, then getting old data won't matter.
If you want to just speed up the number of calls while still service relatively fresh data, stick your intensive calcuation in a block, and cache the results. Set your WCF service to multithreaded. Use Monitor.TryEnter to only allow one thread to enter the calculation code, and if the request isn't calculating (TryEnter returns false) then serve them the cached result of the last calculation.
If you absolutely need everyones data, and its all sequential then they might just have to post data, get a sequence number, and retrieve their results in a second call. This would ensure you won't drop any data.

I cannot use caching because every SOAP call is different, even if all the input arguments are the same (it's a kind of complex reservation system using mathematical formulas).
I like the trick using the sequence number, but I would keep this as a last alternative.
I was just hoping there would be a method to get from the .Net framework that the client has left (because of a time-out) before actually returning the result, but apparently, this isn't the case.

I have a string of 4 Unicode chars in the format:
U+9ffU+5a01U+6c7dU+8eca.
U+ : represents the beggining of the char series.
I need to get the .Net string, in this case we want to get 4 Chinese letters:
駿威汽車
There is "the normal way" to use otomatic parsing of string:
string st = "\u99ff\u5a01\u6c7d\u8eca";
(and we get st = 駿威汽車)
but it is good just for copiler time and not for run time.
and the next code also don't work
string st = "U+99ffU+5a01U+6c7dU+8eca";
st = st.Replace("U+", @"\u");
string st1 = st;
Any Ideas'?

This might work for you, it deals with 6 chars at a time, ignoring 2 and
using the next 4, until nothing is left:
string result="";
while (st.Length!=0) {
int i=int.Parse(st.SubString(2,4), NumberStyles.AllowHexSpecifier);
result+=(char)i;
st=st.SubString(6);
}
provided you add some error handling.

Forgive me if this is a silly or badly formulated question but I'm a newbie in .NET programming.
I need an easy way to exchange asynchronous messages between a Windows service (or client application) and a Web service.
Up till now I've considered (but still not implemented and tested) the following approaches:
- Using a TCP socket. Is there any standardized way in .NET to send/receive messages using this link? For example, using XML or SOAP as a standard encapsulation format for data.
- Using MSMQ. Is this a valid approach for this kind of applications? I could not find many information.
Do you have any suggestions and/or links to good reference material?

Hi,
I am developing a WPF application. I have a requirement where in user enters either partial name/ full name/account alias (e.g. Vipul OR Vipul Mehta OR vipul.mehta) in a WPF TextBox & clicks a customized WPF Resolve button. The resolve button should fetch data from GAL (Global Address List) & populate the text box. More specifically if the entered Name/account alias matches the exact name/account alias from the GAL the full name should then be displayed in the text box.
If more than 1 match is found, the system should open the Outlook address list box with all the matches similar to what is done is Outlook when composing an email.
Can any component of Outlook be utilised to achieve the above functionality?

Hi Guys,
Is there a standard way for managing Guard Conditions for buttons / tool strip items / menu items that will automate turning on / off or show / hide?
I tend to end up writing a lot of guard logic on a case by case basis and it's horrible to maintain. Looking for an easier way.

The basic idea was, i have an application with a large XML document that fills the role of the Model. I also have numerous buttons and drop down menu items that perform the same action when clicked, and their guard conditions are based on a number of elements in the model. I was looking for a mechanism to turn on / off all the controls registered to a particular command, particularly if it could handle dynamic menus and toolbars, and could be triggered from a single event such as when the Xml Document is changed.
I think i already have a solution, but it still needs refining, i was just wondering if there was an existing mechanism for supporting it.

Something along those lines, but somewhat more advanced, I needed a mechanism for managing complicated guard conditions.
I have a solution and will put together an article on it when i've got time / finished playing all my outstanding 360 games.
