serialization allows you to convert an object into a string(xml) and transfer that object to another source(computer/server) via webservice or tcp.
an example of why could save one...you could write something to check a timestamp and if it's the same why go through the hassle(queries, transactions) again of populating the object when you could just read it from a file.

What would be the point of adding File -> Save support to your apps without it? Serialization isn't just for sending objects between computers.

I know you can use serialization to save some of the settings/properties of some controls such as combo-boxes etc ... but can you use it to save the settings of an ActiveX/ocx control?
If you can .. how do you go about it?

Hey guys,
I'm making an IRC client and decided to muck around with the scripting GUI. I'm basing it on Visual Studio 2005/Orcas' interface, with the line numbers and the auto-complete style. I decided I would like to add the collapsible region type thing to it, for each function and custom areas. I tried looking at Sharpdevelop, as it has the same thing, though it's a little complicated for my liking.
I also took a look at Fireball (I think that's the name), another editor which has regions in it, though a lot is in Spanish and somewhat confusing, though the regions are less buggy than on Sharpdevelop.
What I was thinking, is that, store the text in memory and then draw it on the textarea, though I think I'd need to set the text on the control so it can handle the cut, copy, paste, navigation, etc. When I do that, it doesn't draw the text at all, only what the RTB.Text equals.
If someone could please point me in the right direction or if they have looked through the Sharpdevelop and/or Fireball code (as it's C# and I don't know that all too well) and help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Daniel Wallace

Asking the question again won't change the answer[^].
You really do not need a DSN. Building a DSN is actually far more complicated than just building a connection string to your Access database.

No-one can answer that. Download the Direct X SDK, it is full of samples. You need it, in any case.

You need to create new bitmaps for each section, and then copy the sections into them. Finally, don't use picture boxes, draw them in your paint event. Picture boxes do not scale well to what you want to do.

Hello,
[VS 2005]
I have a problem that i want to install on a user computer. After the installation the program will check to see if the database is update. If not, the it will run some sql script file to update the database.
I have the sql script file, but not sure how to get the program to look for the script file to execute it on the server, if the database not up to date. The script file should be part of the installation.
Anyone have any ideas or can point me in the right direction.
Many thanks,
Steve

Why would you want to install "a problem"??

That depends on the database engine in question. There are various command line tools that come with various engines to do this. I think the one for SQL Server is OSQL. You just give it the path of the script to run and some logon information and it'll run the script.

We are looking for a VB.net 2005 programmer to develop a couple of application for the purpose of controlling and graphically displaying the telemetry data from the Robot. The first aplication is to duplicate the following Application . http://www.roboticsgroup.com/demos/radar/radar.html
This Application sends a “get” command to the robot requesting the distance to target , the robot replies with the distance in inches from 0- 255 and the data must be displayed just like the demo above.
Skype me at “bonilla_b”. Thank you

Today I discovered that the .Net 2.0 combobox append autocomplete mode drops of text after a / (forward slash). I am guessing that it is some kind of escape character.
I have never run into this before. Is there a way to resolve this behavior?
Thanks

How to change the Gateway from Vb.net 2005
I saw the following
Dim RixRoad As New ProcessStartInfo<br />
RixRoad.FileName = "Netsh"<br />
<br />
RixRoad.Arguments = "interface ip set address name=""Local Area Connection"" static 192.168.1.102 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.2 1"<br />
Process.Start(RixRoad)
But how to change the Gateway only?
I have no problem if you provide me any other solution then the above 1

I would like to programmatically extract all the files from a Windows XP compressed folder. The folder contains multiple subfolders, and the system.io.compression namespace only deals with individual files.
It's for an install. Shipping this complicated structure, and decompressing it would make life really easy.
I thought of using a process, but I don't know the commands to use.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sir/Madam,
can i programically find out the SMTP server hostname from my computer in vb.net 2005 Window Application.
Thanks and regards
Pankaj

|

First you need to set your SMTP server hostname in your app.config file:
<system.net>
<mailSettings>
<network host="SMTPServerNameHere" />
</mailSettings>
</system.net>
Then you can to this:
dim _systemNet as System.Net.Configuration.NetSectionGroup
dim config as Configuration = Nothing
config = ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(ConfigurationUserLevel.None)
_systemNet = config.GetSectionGroup("system.net")
finally this will have your smtpserver name
_systemNet.MailSettings.Smtp.Network.Host
Hope that helps.
