A minor suggestion - an application I worked on created the file every minute (say), while the checking application checked every 2.5 minutes. Just a little extra buffer in case there is a small time overrun, but the creating program recovered without hanging.

What do you want to do exactly ? Execute the program to open the file ? Then you can simply use ShellExecute for that, the file will be opened by the correct application.
If you want just to retrieve the name of the app (for example), then you have to look in the registry but I cannot help you more on that.

To all - this is the right solution to find an associated application. ShellExecute/Ex(...) only launches it (if one exists).

what should i choose either editbox or richeditbox for following problem.
i have one dialog on that one edit box and 11 button first 10 buttons are 0,1,2,3,..9.and 11th button is delete.
if u run this i clicked 0123456789 ok now i selected 6789
from mouse and click delte button then 6789 should delte..again if i press any jey it should be after 5.
so please solve my problem

Not unless you need some functionality that it provides that a regular edit control does not.

You've not provided any requirements that warrant a richedit control. A regular edit control will work just fine.

I think your problem can be solved in both cases. Both of Edit or Rich Edit controls have such programmatic feature.

If you define a m_cMyEdit control variable for your edit control, then you can delete the selected text using this call:
m_cMyEdit.ReplaceSel("");
Add the above line in the handler for your Delete button.
It will work when something is selected. If your Delete button should delete entire content when nothing is selected, you can try this:
int start, end;
m_cMyEdit.GetSel(start, end);
if( start == end)
{
m_cMyEdit.SetWindowText("");
}
else
{
m_cMyEdit.ReplaceSel("");
}
