I Love TortoiseSvn ( Download Page[^] )
Is really easy to use and integrates into the WindowsExplorer !!!
Check out it and you use source control for everything.

I'll second the recommendation for subversion. I use it to version control not just my source code, but also the deployed code on my websites, and 'My Documents' folder. It's a killer tool, and Tortoise is about the easiest way to use it. I higly recommend WebSVN as well, if you need to share code, changelists, etc. with testers or folks creating documentation (who should also be using it...)
It's all completely free.

Is it better than CVS & TortoiseCVS ? I mean, I've been using it for 3 years and I don't know if the change to SVN is worth it.

I use CVS for a long time too, when I change to SVN I can never come back...
The performance is outstanding and the project is evolving in the right way, in the past month the biggest open source projects host sourceforge.net add subversion support !!!
You must try this, the are some problems until you full understand the Repository Creation and Global versioning but the advantages are really good.
The last thing.. If TortoiseCVS is good then TortoiseSVN is excelent check out the feature list and the documentation.

Subversion + TortoiseSVN. TortoiseSVN might be enough according to your needs.

This looks like it'll do everything I need. I know I need something better but not having little time I didn't want to invest in the full blown source control from Microsoft and this looks like a fair compromise. Thanks!

Much like your self I used to back up my source code with zip files. I have sence switched to Subversion, setting it up and configuring it is pretty easy however if you get stuck, check out this website. Its the official Subversion book.

Let me add another vote for Subversion. I use TortoiseSVN to integrate Subversion with Windows XP.
Integrating with XP, rather than VS, took a little getting used to, but I have found I like it a lot better. My repositiory is hosted by cvsdude.com, which has pretty reasonable prices for subversion hosting.

Ah, I used to do that before I had cvs.
We (small group of 3 to 5 developers) have been using CVS for just over 4 years now and it works great especially in situations where code is shared but even when a single developer works on a project cvs can be of a lot of use. How many times have you broke something in your program with an update then had to trace back to the code lines you believe you changed only not to find what caused the bug... When this happens to me I commit all my code to cvs and then use cvsweb to print the color highlited differences between each file I changed.
Our setup is linux server that runs our cvs deamon and on our apache webserver (different machine) we have cvsweb installed. The cvs server is backed up each day to a disk based backup via bacula (yet another linux server this one has 3TB of RAID6 but the cvs backup can easily fit on a single dvd).

We use ClearCase, Its the best tool where multisite and multi-developer development is required plus a large related code data base. Its a complex tool but its very flexible.
It may not be suited for personal use.

We were accessing VSS over a VPN up until last week. The server that has our Source went down and the person who maintains it is on vacation. To add insult to ingury we are 500 miles from the VSS server and it's in the persons house!!
So we took what ever we had for a local copy and built a new VSS Server. Now we have to wait until the person gets back from vacation so we can get the original source and merge it with our local copy.

Incidentally, second in importance to Source Control is Backup/Recovery procedures. If you don't have those for development environments, you are asking to be put out of business.

I really can't imagine working without source control system even if I work alone, but it seems to be the second most popular answer here.
Two questions for people who don't use SC:
1. Why?
2. How?

On projects where I am the sole developer I don't see the need to use source control. The benefit is that you have access to previous versions of your code. Are there any other compelling reasons for using s/c for single-developer projects?
To me it's just an extra complication to set it up and maintain and then use. However I have been planning to put a few bigger projects onto s/c so that it can have other developers working on it and file versions. I'll get around to it at some stage..

Having the complete history of code changes is essential to successful maintenance. If something works in version n and not in version n+1, it takes just a diff between the versions to narrow down the problem.

Learning curve for simple SC systems like Subversion is very short, and the time spent is payed off very quickly.

This is the biggest reason why I use a cvs on all of my projects even the 100 line test app to evaluate a new algorithm ...

I use Subversion for all my projects, for Word Documents and WebPages too.
There is a lot of advantages using a source control system:
- You can Tag important milestones in your project.
- You can Backup All your projects and the history of them in one step.
- You can Branch your project.
- You can go back to see your changes.
- If you use TortoiseSvn you can setup a repository in two clicks
- ...

Source control is certainly the MOST important element of a safe development cycle (well, with the exception of sleep i suppose!)
Without source control you dont have any history of your changes and you can edit files randomly (destructively) without being aware...
There is also an audit trail to think about. And not just for multiple developers. If your used to submitting change lists to your sc server after every relevant change you make (ie, not just checking all your files out for a day and checking them back in at home time. Actually checking the same files in and out) then its extremely easy to add a remove 'features' that you made a 3am on a saturday since you know what time you did it.
Without SC you'd be forced to just hunt and hope... never a good idea really...

It is scarily easy. Company I worked for before CP had zero source control. We simply never used it. 10 projects a month, developers all over the world, no source control. Sometimes updates were emailed to me so I could FTP it up to the live server. No staging, no test.
Now that I use source control, I don't know how I could have lived without it.

At one of my previous companies, I distinctly remember a day when I saw a senior lead directly edit a perl script (using vi) on our live server in a US hosting center through an ssh session. Funnily, I didn't think it was a bad thing to do, and actually even thought it pretty cool at that time.

I have seen the same scenario at the company i work right now. When I joined in 2004 we did not have any source control setup.
But now it is much better as we have VSS installed on local area network to keep versions of code- A very helpful thing.
