I tend to 'no', but I'm no professional.
The crucial point is that you can't leave references uninitialized.

If you have a class like this:
class Node
{
  Node& l;
  Node& r;
};

You need a constructor like:
Node::Node(Node& Left, Node& Right)
: l(Left),
  r(Right)
{
  ...
}

This means: 'You can only create a new Node, if you already have two other Nodes'.
