I found CodeProject.com after evaluating several other similar sites. You guys are a good crowd.
As for these other sites, what's out there? I suppose we have Reddit, StackOverflow, GitHub, and several others, but they don't compare. Hypothetically, if CP never came to be, where would you be?

I went to GitHub first because I had a lot of code to publish. But it wasn't until I wrote articles here that my software started being viewed and downloaded, either here or on GitHub, far more often. Having a place to publish articles also encouraged me to fill in a lot of documentation gaps that needed filling in. Reddit, and especially StackOverflow, are good for getting answers to very focused technical questions, but they don't come close to the breadth of coverage that you sometimes find in articles here, and their culture is sometimes rather snotty.

All I'm gonna say is this, when comparing requests for a web server in 3 languages...
- Zig 118K requests per second
- Rust 113K requests per second
- Go 18K requests per second
(Just for reference even JavaScript can do 15k per second... cough cough Go)

I'll add to that,
Accept - Beat the Bastards - YouTube[^]
"the debugger doesn't tell me anything because this code compiles just fine" - random QA comment
"Facebook is where you tell lies to your friends. Twitter is where you tell the truth to strangers." - chriselst

On the chance that CP goes the way of the Dodo[^] in the coming days or weeks there is a fairly good chance that it will happen without warning. Poof! Spooky dust!
When / if this happens many of us will also simply "disappear". For me this is it. There is no "other" site where I participate or even communicate. If CP goes away so does FGS1963.
To all of you - it's been a pleasure. You're mostly a smart group. Your humour is right up my alley. I've learned a ton about tech, about different cultures and hell - about life. I'm sticking around to the bitter end but if that end happens abruptly - please accept my great thanks for having "known" you.
FYI - FGS1963 is actually a 2nd login made ~3 years ago when I decided to return after an extended absence. I killed my original login after ~18 years and 20k+ messages. I was much chattier back then. My original login is actually still quoted in one signature that I know of. Well, actually my late uncle is quoted by reference to me - but I'll take it. I was actually here back in the days of Nish, Paul Watson, Shog9, David Wulff, etc...

CP's demise will be so sad! I agree with you about a monthly / annual membership fee.
Ok, I have had my coffee, so you can all come out now!

Hopefully that doesn't happen, but it is not looking good right now. It is a site I have learned much from, and a mostly respectful site which is very refreshing.
P.S. Mike, your uncle had a great sense humor. (guessing, hope I'm right)

He passed a few years ago at the ripe old age of 89. He did it right. Calmly while sleeping - not screaming bloody murder like the other people in the car he was driving.

Good friends, all! Those were the days, chatting all night with Nish on his 1 kbs (max) dialup connection. Good times!
If I poof from here, it won't be because I went voluntarily! I was here in the earliest days and it was a lifesaver when I was coding and doing sysadmin stuff in the 90s. I haven't actually written a desktop app in 10 years now, but this is still home, and my GOTO place for technical information. I'm going on 25 years now, the longest I've ever been a member of anything, I think! There will be no replacing it if it goes, and there's no place better on the Interwebs anywhere. I probably won't even bother to look...
I hope will remember to feed the hamsters; we don't want repeat of that cannibalism that weaked havoc in the server room 2002! It took weeks for Chris to train new ones, and to replace all the chewed wiring among the Raspberry units.
Will Rogers never met me.

I'll certainly miss everyone I've had the pleasure of chatting with (you know who you are) as well as those whose articles and tips I've enjoyed reading and learned a lot from. If you'd like to keep in touch, feel free to reach out on LinkedIn (link on my CP profile).
Best,

PS: Damn, I can't believe I'm penning this note. I remember when CP was a site I visited several times an hour on a daily basis. It's still the first bookmark on my browser, a carry over from the heady early days.

Just noticed that the popup ads are gone from the side and top. Myself I certainly don't block them so that is another scary factor.

We're pretty close to having the ability to bring back extinct animals, aren't we? As long as we have the DNA of an extinct animal and a surrogate species, the rest can all be worked out eventually.
So, let's say that CP does go the way of the Dodo... We may have some semblance of "DNA" that could remain. As it's said, "Once it's on the Internet, it's there forever" ...So, if that's the case, it's just a matter of collecting the data. Someone who's familiar with writing computer code might be able to pull this type of thing off. Do any of you know any computer programmers? If we could just find one, or two, it just might be possible.
fgs1963 wrote: When / if this happens many of us will also simply "disappear". For me this is it. There is no "other" site where I participate or even communicate. If CP goes away so does FGS1963. I signed up here at CP after evaluating several CP-like sites. I don't know where I'd go, either. If there's no place to go, then why don't we all make a place? Once again, we'll have to find one of those computer programmer types to get this done. If we can do that, then it might just be possible.fgs1963 wrote: To all of you - it's been a pleasure. I've enjoyed my time here with all of you. I would be disappointed if the site disappeared. In such a case, I'm not going to say "goodbye". I'll say, "See you around". Even if CP were to go *poof*, we'll still encounter one another in other places given our common interests.

It has been a good run for sure. I had several good years at the start, even got CP MVP twice. I got to meet a few of you in person; Nish, Mike Dunn, and Christian Graus at a microsoft event in Seattle, and Roger Wright on a crazy road trip I took to Arizona.
Then I got married and had kids so I now spend way less time here.
As a hobby programmer I learnt a lot from all of you. This site is also my only web presence so if this place disappears I will also disappear off the webs.
Time to board a plane to see the inlaws for Thanksgiving weekend.
Within you lies the power for good - Use it!

I tried to email Sean Ewington about the future of the website, and the mail was undeliverable. He's in my contacts, so the address was accurate.
This is unfortunate. Like a thieves in the night, everyone is suddenly gone.
