I bought a total luxury item - an RTX 4080 I don't need, and could totally do without.
I did it because I'm doing so well on a project I wanted to treat myself.
I was planning on making the purchase eventually, but I feel a little guilty. Not sure why. I deserve this.
I'm giving my 2080 TI to my brother in law. I already gave my sister a 3070 TI that I got for free, so at least I'm spreading my largesse around to people I care about.
It's a bit much for Fallout 4. That's what I play though. My 2080 TI overheats now when my chassis fans aren't on full - never used to be a problem before because they were always on full, not controlled before - and especially bad if I've been playing for a bit, so that's part of what pushed me to upgrade. This card shouldn't have to go full blast to get the performance I want.
Oh well. Mixed feelings, but at least I'm looking forward to it. I'm not looking forward to the actual process of pulling my old card, because the release lever is buried behind mobo heat sinks, but the final result will be fun.
I guess I can't really say I'm not a gamer anymore, now that I've invested this much.

Sweet. 16gb version?

Yeah. My other option was a 3090. I thought about a 4090 but between the price and the wattage I didn't want to risk it.
The 4080 has less RAM than the 3090 but gets better framerates. Since I don't need more than 16GB for what I play I decided to go with that. And it uses 30 fewer watts which was ultimately what pushed me toward it.

I felt guilty when I bought my 3080, because like you I didn't need it but it's been a great board.

I see that the Puritan ethic is alive and well in the USA.
If you want something and can afford it, why not buy it? We work to live, not live to work.
Enjoy!
Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.

I mean, I could have been responsible and dumped it savings, and put it toward a major expense or two we've put off - like we'd like to replace our furnace with a more efficient model. I don't know how Puritan that is. I think it's more about how responsible vs. irresponsible I'm being with otherwise disposable income. I do see what you're saying though.

I think of a furnace for firing clay and a boiler for heating homes ( might be a right left pond thing )

Itβs boiler (or tank) when it heats water and furnace when it heats air. At least North of 48, that is.
