Maybe it is a new type of network configuration.

Did you agree with him that it is not done?
Or did you counter him saying that it is done?
Which position are you speaking about? Would you mind to elaborate?

I agree we should self-censor ourselves before making a post. Think about what we are typing before pressing 'post', knowing that there are lots of different people here from all kinds of backgrounds. This is a technical site, and potentially controversial verbiage should be avoided (unless it's about placement of braces ). All this is to say that this 'thread locking' should not occur in the first place, let alone complaining about it later on.

Right b/c if someone posts an article about say "useless annual reviews" that discusses how the consensus's among staff is that they are useless you probably really shouldn't agree or disagree or say anything beyond "Thank you for sharing" as you could upset someone who can lock a thread if they don't agree with you. Yes it would seem obvious that you should just not post something you don't want honest feedback on but hey were hear.
I didn't realize how self-censoring the programming community had become. That might explain why we seem to have more software related problems than ever; people self-censor so if their boss tells them to do something they know is wrong or counter productive they say nothing; they self-censor. It really makes me wonder how one can even get a question answered or at least honestly. Interesting.

In my opinion, it is totally legitime to give feedback to something and / or setting boundaries with Speak-Up (I am even holding a couple of presentations about it at a work's event soon).
The biggest problem about it is how it is done. And believe me, it is very difficult to do it right.
About this site... we had the Soapbox where it was allowed to speak about more controversial topics, but at the end it went really south and it was deleted from the site due to its toxicity. Some people that were here only for that forum started trolling / mobbing other users / areas of the site and they got banned.
If you do it respectfull and without flame wars, we are actually happy to have conversations a bit aside of programming, best if it is technology related, but still there are some good offtopic threads and some more to come.
Of course, in the moment that things go out of boundaries there will be meassures. Either by the community itself using the given tools or by the staff. And... to be honest, I like it the way it is.
Every site in the internet has some rules (more or less obvious or fair but still they are there) and this community has better clima than many, many other sites out there.
If you see these points and you agree. Stay and participate (please in a civilized mode).
If you don't, the easiest thing is to get your coat and leave the platform (please do not forget to close the door behind you).

I don't know which "on topic" conversation you are referring to, but...
Locking threads is something only the staff can do and it has been a while since the last time I saw a thread being locked.
If message(s) by you got deleted, this is something it might happen in a popular / democratic mode.
I would say, this is one of the communities with a higher respect to the members in the net.
And if you think the "right to talk" means that you are able to say whatever you think crossing lines (doesn't matter if on topic or off topic), then you are better placed in "X" with Musk than here.
Because in CP we usually follow a very basic rule: "Your right ends where the right of others starts"

I suspect it was the rant about HR departments (various members contributed) where I gently called out this particular member's sexist remarks. Microsoft is making a high-stakes bet on AI. But will it tarnish its reputation that it has worked long and hard to rebuild, bringing a return to the "Microshaft" days? Its reputation?! *Its reputation?!*
I mean, love 'em to death, but that is a company with a generally not positive reputation if there ever was one.
OK, not counting Oracle.
Or Google.
Or IBM.
Or... well, how about this - they're in the bottom half of the rankings for reputation?
