However, Intel has also recognized there is still a lot of 16-bit software, so instead of dumping "real mode" entirely, it will be moved into a virtual processor and emulated by the virtual machine's hardware. Remember, the only requirement for an RTOS that isn't in a general purpose system is that from the response to an event has a predetermined time to occur, regardless of other system requirements. Even OpenVMS could be tuned to become a real-time operating system. I know, I worked on an OpenVMS system that met the requirements of a RTOS. Real mode in the x86 line of processors is nothing more than a chip level memory management scheme, one that doesn't support virtual memory.
