No, the problem is simply that it's not possible.
You can't display anything on the page and wait for anything to happen before returning from the function. Anything that you try to display on the page will not show up until the javascript is completed. Nothing shows up while the function is still running.

Try using something along these lines:
Function GetRates()
Dim strHtml
Dim objXMLHTTP, xml
Set xml = Server.CreateObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP")
xml.Open "GET", "http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=GBPUSD=X", False
xml.Send
strHtml = xml.ResponseText
Set xml = Nothing
intPos = InStr(strHtml, "Last Trade:")
strHtml = Mid(strHtml, intPos)
intPos = InStr(strHtml, "$")
strHtml = Mid(strHtml, intPos - 7, 6)
Response.Write "GBP/USD: " & strHtml
End Function
This gets FOREX data from a Yahoo page but the entire page is in strHtml: parse to suit.

Which way would you recommend when creating a web site, one .js file with all your common functions or one js file per function? Why? Has anyone done speed tests on slower connections?

Once the javscript files are loaded, they are cached, so it doesn't make such a big difference.
If you have a large file, it will of course take a little longer to load the first time. Splitting it up would spread the load time so that it might feel shorter.

I'd go for many. If, say, your home page only requires some of the functionality then don't make the user wait for ages to get the js file before they can use the site. Similarly, if some of the functionality is only required for certain pages, don't have the user wait for functionality they may not use to be downloaded.
The js files will be cached, so once the user has them they need not be requested again.

I'm new to VS 2005 and am trying to play with installing a new website on my server. So, I got the TimeTracker starter kit, built it and then used Copy Web Site... to move the project to my server.
I connected ok (New Web Site...) then selected everything in the source window and clicked the right-arrow button. After churning away, I got a dialog saying the following:
<br />
---------------------------<br />
Copy Web Completed<br />
---------------------------<br />
There were errors during copy web. Please view log for details.<br />
---------------------------<br />
OK <br />
---------------------------<br />
I checked the contents of the website folder and found that the TimeTracker.mdf file had not been copied.
So, (finally!) here are my questions:
1) Where is this log I'm supposed to view for details?
and
2) Any guesses as to why the .mdf file won't copy?
TIA!

Hi,
I'm pretty desperate.
I have a page (default.aspx) with an iframe. In the iframe i have two frames. In one of the frames I have a LinkButton that should redirect the top page (default.aspx)
I've tried RegisterStartupScript with lots of different Javascripts like: top.location.href='new.aspx' but all is loaded in the iframe...
Is this doable?
Please, please help!
|
|
|
|
|
I actuaklly never tried using a frameset in an iframe, but this is how I think that it works:
Using the window.top property inside a frame will reference the frameset, e.g. the contents of the iframe. From there you can use the window.parent property to reference the page containing the iframe.
So, this should work:
window.top.parent.location = 'new.aspx';

Actually I got to apologize. I guess I got a little too tired, and didnt get the code in the right eventhandler at first. So top.location.href do work!
Thanks anyway Guffa - I'll try your idea also.

|
|
|
|
In that case just use window.top.location.

I'm not sure if this is the best forum to post this question but it seems like the most logical. I need to hide the MS Throbber and status bar that appears on a refresh in full screen mode. I don't mean the F11 full screen mode! I'm talking F11, THEN right click near the throbber and check auto-hide. This hides everything on the page except the content EXCEPT the annoying thobber that likes to slide in from the right to display the MS logo and status bar upon refresh!
I need to hide this becuase the web page is going to be output through a port and fed into the local cable television for display as a local channel. The page will use iFrames with meta refresh tags that are currently causing the throbber to appear. I'd like to use IE's filter's to give me transistion affects as well, which I don't think are available in other browser's. Any idea's would be much appreciated!

i think you are talking about HTTP Authentication, for this you need to configure the webserver for permissions for that folder.

Thanks for your response.
Yes it is HTTP Authentication.
I have designed a webPage that page can be viewed by all.
But for Administtrative purpose i have a kept button upon clicking it is giving whole window for authentication. But i want a small box having two input fields. Upon clicking my "Administrative" button it will prompt out in the centre position of my first page. So user can give Username and password for Authentication for modifications in the sites.
Just like our Windows Application.
Please give some tips.
How it can be implemented.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with Shockwave viewing on and Apple Mac. I have been asked to look a web site for a colleague. It uses a shockwave file for a banner and another for a menu. On Mac these are not displayed for some reason. The HTML includes code to download shockwave if needed, but I suspect it works with IE only.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi!!
I have the following in my.js file. It works fine in IE, but does not display anything in Mozilla. How can I change this so that it displays in both browsers? Preferably in all (or most browsers).
"My ABC Website" is just an example name of a website.
window.defaultStatus = "My ABC Website";

Hi,
I am using Visual Web Developer with Framework 2.0.
I have the following page called default.aspx. At the top of this .aspx page, I have the follwoing:
<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="default.aspx.cs" Inherits="Platters.DefaultPage" %>
<%@ Register TagPrefix="Platters" TagName="Footer" Src="~/controls/Platter_footer.ascx" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="Platters.Includes.Common" %>
The namespace Platters.Includes.Common has a globals.cs class that contains global variables used across the site.
Now if I want to use these global variables in the Platter_footer.ascx control, must import that name space again? TO me it does not make sense because I have to import this namespace in the default.aspx page, and in the user control. Why twice??
The top of my Platter_footer.ascx control looks like:
<%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="Platter_footer.ascx.cs" Inherits="Platters.Includes.Controls.Footer" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="Platters.Includes.Common" %>
Is it maybe better to import these namespaces in the .cs of each file, instead of at the page level?
Regards,
ma se
|
|
|
|
|
The user control is compiled separately. It doesn't know that you will use it in that specific page when it's compiled, so you have to import all namespaces that the control uses in the code of the control.
