Hi anyone!
I am trying to draw to my custom control with VS2005 with compact framework 2.0.
My control and a second class which references its Graphics object are seperate
but in the same file... i create my second class and attempt to draw small images
on the control using its graphics object reference at later stages of the app running.
I get an ObjectDisposedException, but I understand what this means, but is there anywway
I can reference the controls drawing object just before i process the drawing code?
or any other work around for that matter! thankyou in advance for this!

Best practice is to do all your drawing in the OnPaint method or in a handler for the Paint event. You can cause a callback into OnPaint by calling the Invalidate method, to tell Windows what part of the control needs to be repainted.
If you want to perform some immediate painting, rather than waiting for the Paint event to fire (which is deferred, in the Windows messaging model, to allow input to be processed at a higher priority than painting operations) follow this pattern:
using ( Graphics g = ctl.CreateGraphics() )
{
} The documentation for CreateGraphics specifically says, "The Graphics is only valid for the duration of the current window's message." You are not allowed to save it and reuse it.
The technical reason behind this is that Device Contexts - the Windows data structure behind the Graphics object - are expensive, and the system only keeps a small pool of them available. If you were to retain them, the pool would quickly run out and no-one would be able to draw anything. So the Framework automatically gives it back at the end of processing every window message.
You still need to remember everything that you've drawn anyway and be prepared to redraw it in OnPaint . Windows does not save your screen layout when something is drawn on top of it (the start menu, a notification bubble, another application), you have to repaint it when the obscuring object is removed.
The best resource for understanding Windows' drawing and events model is Charles Petzold's book "Programming Windows, Fifth Edition". Yes, it hasn't been updated in 10 years. It targets desktop Windows. It uses the C programming language. The fundamentals are the same between the desktop and CE, and they haven't changed since Win32 was introduced with NT 3.1 in 1993.
If you do turn your hand to the desktop, note that Windows Vista with Aero now does save your drawing because you're not actually drawing to the screen, you're drawing to an off-screen bitmap which the graphics card combines with all the other windows' bitmaps to produce the screen output. You should still do all your drawing in OnPaint so that the drawing can be synchronized properly.

Hello all,
Latelt I have been complicating my life with more programming that i can handle. Now I am developing databases applications on the pocket pc and using Data on the Run to design them on the fly but I would like to use them directly from my device, anyone knows how? And how can i use a "access database" from the pocket pc itself?
Or even better how can i use databases on the pocket pc? I tried to use sqlce but not luck, probably bad installation or something like it.
I got a php and asp server for the pocket pc and since i don't have a computer i will be creating websites with php and asp in the pocket pc... cool huh!?
best regards,
Luis

So i think best way use the device for BT test. because of enumlator not suitable for BT.file transfer and all.if u have any further question come to online in google talk with vrrave@gmail.com.

I'm wondering how to implement an auto-upgrading system for a windows mobile (C# .NET 2.0) application that works as well as ClickOnce or something similar. The app would communicate to a web service to get patch info and the actual files as well.
Does anybody know of an article that explains how to impliment an upgrade system for a mobile application?
I've read a few articles on transfering files over a web service, so that's as much of a hurdle.

Hi,
Does anyone know if it possible to install Version 2.0 of the Compact Framework for use with Visual Studio.NET 2003?
If yes, where can it be downloaded?
Thanks in advance.

|

No, Visual Studio 2005 is required.
There is a standalone .NET Framework 2.0 SDK[^] but you won't get any form designers or easy-to-use debuggers.

Hi,
gottimukkala wrote: How can I register COM wrapper dll in pocket pc. Is this possible?
Are you talking about a COM Callable Wrapper (CCW) that allows non .NET CF applications be able to make use of COM objects exposed by your .NET assembly?
If you are the answer is you can't do this. The .NET Compact Framework does not currently support the hosting APIs etc required to host the .NET CF runtime within another (native) process.
Hope this helps,

Hello,
I want to handle the event when the screen orientation changes. I searched the web but nothing.
I want to put my code for each orientation based on the orientation. Is there any event that I can/should handle? I was thinking of capturing the orientation hardware's button pressed event but could not find it.
Thanks for your help,
CodingYoshi

Hi CodingYoshi,
CodingYoshi wrote: I want to handle the event when the screen orientation changes. I searched the web but nothing.
What language are you developing in?
When the orientation changes the size of your fullscreen window will automatically change. So one way to detect changes is to handle the window size changed event or window message that occurs in your chosen framework.
If you need to tell if you are in portrait or landscape mode you can determine this by then checking if the current window width is greater than the height.
If for some reason you actually need to determine the true orientation of the device (i.e. 0, 90, 180, 270 degrees) you can do this but the answer is a little different depending upon your programming language/environment of choice.
Hope this helps,

Hi Christopher,
Thanks for the reply. I am using .NET (VB, C#, C++). Your suggestions definitely help and I will try them and let you know if I run into trouble.
Thanks,
