I deliver robust, clean, adaptable, future-ready applications that are properly documented for users and maintainers. I have deep knowledge in multiple technologies and broad familiarity with computer and software technologies of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
While it isn't perceived as sexy, my focus has always been the back end of the application stack, where data arrives from a multitude of sources, and is converted into reports that express my interpretation of The Fundamental Principle of Tabular Reporting, and are the most visible aspect of the system to senior executives who approve the projects and sign the checks.
While I can design a front end, I prefer to work at the back end, getting data into the system from outside sources, such as other computers, electronic sensors, and so forth, and getting it out of the system, as reports to IDENTIFY and SOLVE problems.
When presented with a problem, I focus on identifying and solving the root problem for the long term.
Specialties: Design: Relational data base design, focusing on reporting; organization and presentation of large document collections such as MSDS libraries
Development: Powerful, imaginative utility programs and scripts for automated systems management and maintenance
Industries: Property management, Employee Health and Safety, Services
Languages: C#, C++, C, Python, VBA, Visual Basic, Perl, WinBatch, SQL, XML, HTML, Javascript
Outside Interests: Great music (mostly, but by no means limited to, classical), viewing and photographing sunsets and clouds, traveling by car on small country roads, attending museum exhibits (fine art, history, science, technology), long walks, especially where there is little or no motor traffic, reading, especially nonfiction and thoughtfully written, thought provoking science fiction

While working as an engineer, I occasionally applied my problem-solving skills to software problems. For example, I noticed that numbers in increasing filenames did not always increase. I tinkered with solutions and subsequently wrote an article that was published in Dr. Dobb’s Journal.
After that job fizzled, I switched to programming full time and have applied my programming skills to multimedia education, web-based games of skill, legal-compliance and ethics-training courses, a portable PET scanner, and shareware programs.

I attended Southern Polytechnic State University and earned a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science and later returned to earn a Masters of Science in Software Engineering. I've largely developed solutions that are based on a mix of Microsoft technologies with open source technologies mixed in. I've got an interest in astronomy and you'll see that interest overflow into some of my code project articles from time to time.

Engineering career - originally precision mechanical, then electronic, then computer, then telecommuncations, then marketing, then software and everything else involved in specifying, designing, developing and implementing small systems using hardware, firmware and software.
Expertise in various tools and languages over the years as fashions and requirements shifted. Moved from screwdrivers and soldering irons into 8080 and 6502 machine code and thence to many high level languages.
Currently mostly in a .NET standalone windows and web application environment with SQL server but also using LAMP environment when appropriate.
Retiring soon, but always open for interesting projects that float my old wooden sailing boat.

Love and passion for low level, high performance code! The lower the better! I disassemble everything!
I learnt x86 Assembler in the 90's, after reading the `Zen of Assembly Language` and `Graphics Programmers Black Book` by Michael Abrash.
I also love C & C++, but I'm anti-Modern C++!
(It's hard to clarify what I mean by `anti-Modern C++`! Because I love a lot of things added to C++11! Like nullptr, auto and a few other things)
I hate the abominations called `futures`/`promises`, STL containers, shared_ptr etc.
I've been inspired by the works of John Carmack, Mark J. Kilgard, Michael Abrash, Bob Jenkins and especially Agner Fog!
